What is COB and why does it matter?

With the widespread use of LED products in the field of lighting, COB has become one of the mainstream products in the packaging industry. However, many people still do not understand exactly what COB means.

What is COB? 


COB (Chips on Board) is an LED packing technology used for LED light engines. That means multiple LED chips are packed together on the same LED substrate board as one lighting module. 

 

To achieve high light efficiency, the LED chip will be directly attached to the mirror metal substrate which has a high reflectance.

 

There are LED substrate boards with different materials, such as copper boards, aluminum boards, ceramic boards and so on. Among all these options, the chip on the ceramic boards has better performance in terms of lighting efficiency and luminance reduction.



What are the advantages of COB? 


1. Excellent light quality

 

The traditional SMD forms a light source component by attaching multiple discrete devices to the substrate board, which will cause problems with spotlight, glare, and ghosting.

 

However, COB LED is a multi-chip package that can increase the lighting area by more than 10 times, so it avoids uncomfortable glare to the maximum extent. And COB LED is the surface light source, the light angle is large and easy to adjust, so it can reduce the loss of light refraction.



2. Personalized customization

 

COB can perfectly meet the different needs of clients. By modifying the structure and material, we can change the light emitting area and external dimensions of the light source.

 

Meanwhile, the LED substrate boards with a thickness of 0.4-1.2mm can reduce the weight to 1/3 of traditional products, significantly reducing the cost of structure, transportation and engineering for clients. 


3. Multiple application scenarios

 

Before, you need multiple LED sources to produce high lumen output. But now, COB chips can produce a large amount of lumens with less energy.

 

COB offers very high luminous fluxes from small size packages and thus allow flexible design of luminaire.

 

The application of COB light source is very convenient, and it can be directly applied to lamps without other processes.


What are the main applications of COB? 


The main application is the scene with higher requirements on the light source.

 

Lamp applications: Downlights, wall lights, ceiling lights, reading lights, spot lights, jewelry lights, plant lights, etc.

 

Scene application: Supermarkets, clothing stores, Malls, cabinets, living rooms, hotels, bedrooms, kitchens, etc.
